Liverpool made it six wins from six in the UEFA Champions League last night. And in doing so, Jurgen Klopp’s side broke a quite astonishing record for English football.
As per the club’s official Twitter account, the Reds became the first Premier League side to win all six Champions League group stage matches in this incarnation of the competition.
Liverpool were one of two sides to win every group stage match, with Ajax running riot and claiming six victories. And these incredible runs make the two historic European sides two of the favourites for the Champions League this campaign.
Indeed, a case could be made that Liverpool’s achievement surpasses that of Ajax’s given the level of quality in the Reds group. Klopp’s side were drawn into the so-called ‘Group of Death’, yet the Premier League side make a mockery of the title.
Whilst the likes of AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and Porto seem like difficult teams on paper, Liverpool breezed past each side both home and away to book their ticket to the Round of 16 of the Champions League.
And based on the manner in which Liverpool won these games, the Premier League side must be considered one of the favourites for the competition, along with English rivals Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
