West Ham wanted to go in a different direction this summer and have shelled out more than ever before on a manager to bring Pellegrini in as David Moyes’ replacement.

Hammers co-owner David Gold has pledged the club will be spending more than ever before too, in an effort to finally make good on promises made when the club left Upton Park for the London Stadium in Stratford.

The appointment has excited the majority of West Ham’s fans who want to see better quality, attacking football.

Supporters hope Pellegrini can attract a higher calibre of player when he reshapes the Hammers squad this summer.

But some pundits and rival fans have questioned the appointment citing the fact Pellegrini has been in China for 18 months as evidence he is out of touch with European football and the transfer market here.

West Ham chairman David Gold talks to Sir Trevor Brooking ahead of the Pre-Season Friendly between West Ham United and Juventus at London Stadium on August 7, 2016 in London, England.

The club has already been linked with a host of players including Barcelona defender Marlon Santos.

Now in an interview with whufc.com West Ham royalty Sir Trevor Brooking is backing Pellegrini to prove the doubters wrong and attract stars to East London.

“It is now a clean break and a fresh start with the new manager, and we are looking forward to seeing the impact he can make,” Brooking told the club’s official website.

“His previous experience of the Premier League is also a big positive. He’s not coming into a league – or the challenges within it – that he doesn’t know. He has good knowledge, he did well in Spain, and he will have good awareness and contacts when it comes to identifying potential new players.

“Four or five new signings have been mentioned, and I think that is what most fans will be hoping for.

“It’s not always easy to conjure up that number, though, and we’ve got to be sensible, patient, and give the manager the backing and the time to make the additions he needs.

“They have got to be the right signings longer term. Manuel has got a three-year contract, and we must give him the opportunity to make progression over that period of time.”
