Reece James has labelled Willian a ‘legend forever’ on Instagram after he made the call to leave Arsenal before the closure of the summer transfer window.
Despite having two years left on his Arsenal deal, Willian has opted to tear up his £240k-a-week contract, according to Sky Sports.
This time last summer, the flying winger was swapping Chelsea for Arsenal after his contract expired at Stamford Bridge.
And even though he started off his career with two assists against Fulham, it quickly went downhill, thereafter.
Willian shared on Instagram that he ‘received a lot of criticism from some members of the press’ that he had opted to join the North London club for ‘financial reasons’.
And he is hoping his actions, to tear up his current contract and literally give up on over £20 million, proves that wasn’t the case.
Following his long-worded post on Instagram, his former Chelsea teammate James simply wrote ‘legend forever’.
Reiss Nelson also added: “What an amazing role model to every young player. I will miss you a lot and hope to see you soon.”
Given the negativity around Arsenal because of their quite abject start to the new Premier League season, perhaps Willian will receive praise for his actions.
Whenever a player joins another rival, unless he is one of their top stars, it’s always going to be difficult for that player to win the fans over.
And that’s exactly what Willian found because it just never worked out for the Brazilian.
He will now return to his homeland and join one of their most famous clubs in Corinthians.
