Danny Murphy is a big fan of Chelsea’s Levi Colwill but fears that the England U21 international joining Premier League giants Liverpool would be the wrong move at this stage of his career.

While penalty-saving hero James Trafford appears to be on the verge of a £19 million move to Burnley, many of his England U21 team-mates will return from that successful trip to Romania and Georgia with their futures at club level very much up in the air.

Can Emil Smith-Rowe, Cole Palmer and Cameron Archer nail down a first-team spot at Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa? What next for Max Aarons, amid interest from West Ham and Fulham? Can Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott take the next step at Liverpool?

And while Chelsea are insistent that Levi Colwill will not be following fellow academy graduate Mason Mount out the door – per Fabrizio Romano – that has not stopped rumours swirling about a potential switch to Liverpool

Chelsea starlet Levi Colwill reportedly a Liverpool target

Danny Murphy, the former Anfield favourite, is a big fan of Colwill. But he cannot understand how a move to Merseyside would benefit a 20-year-old centre-half who wants regular first-team football after an impressive loan spell at Brighton and Hove Albion last term.

“If his desire – which it sounds like it is, and fair play to him – is to play first-team football…,” Murphy begins, speaking to talkSPORT (12 July, 12pm).

“Although I would love to see him at Liverpool, because I am a Liverpool fan and he is real quality, why would he go there? He’s not going to play.

“If I was him, I would ask for a loan. Go to Brighton again for another year.

“I don’t think he would (play regularly at Liverpool) although potentially he is very, very good. He’s not going to play ahead of Virgil (van Dijk) or (Ibrahima) Konate.”

Colwill started 13 Premier League games for Roberto de Zerbi’s side in 2022/23. And, at a time in which left-sided centre-halves are worth their weight in gold, it’s unlikely that Liverpool will be the only side making checks on the one-time Huddersfield ace; Tottenham Hotspur another side looking to add a defensive southpaw to their ranks.

Spurs recently sent Clement Lenglet back to Barcelona. Bundesliga duo Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven appear to be the most likely replacements.
