Jamie Carragher has suggested Tyler Morton was abandoned by his Liverpool teammates on Sunday night against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 19-year-old midfielder earned his full Premier League debut in the 2-2 draw away to Spurs.

Thiago Alcantara returned a positive covid test and Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were absent.

So Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had little choice but to turn to the Kirkby academy graduate.

And although Morton never shyed away from the task, the teenager certainly did struggle at times and Klopp brought him off in the second half.

But Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports, claims that his Liverpool teammates did him no favours by leaving him ‘exposed’ too often.

He said: “Liverpool had a big problem in midfield. I felt a bit for Tyler Morton. He was exposed. He was left on his own too often.”

Reassuring

Hopefully Klopp has been reassuring Morton in the aftermath of the game.

Remember, he was up against the likes of Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele for Tottenham.

Say what you want about both, but Alli’s ability is well established, even if it’s missing as of late, and Ndombele is as powerful a running midfielder as you’ll find in the Premier League.

Bottom line, this was such a difficult first full Premier League game for the youngster, against an Antonio Conte outfit.

The good news is that his next outing should, in theory, be a lot easier.
