Leeds United youngster Theo Richardson is on the verge of making a controversial switch to Manchester United.

Teenage goalkeeper Richardson has been on trial with the Red Devils, and made his first appearance for the club at the weekend in a youth game, having been an unused substitute the week before.

Richardson’s contract is set to expire at Leeds this June, and his exit from Thorp Arch appears inevitable.

He appears focused on winning a contract at Old Trafford, sending a tweet after his debut.

Richardson was thrown into a big encounter, with Manchester United’s under-18 side facing Manchester City.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Manchester United’s website hailing the debutant, who it added was ‘recently acquired from Leeds United’.

The report stated: “The young keeper had a splendid match, making several terrific saves, especially in the closing stages as the search for a decisive goal intensified.”

Richardson had been a regular for Leeds’ under-18s this season, featuring in their FA Youth Cup run.

Yet he faced tough competition at Leeds with England youth international Will Huffer and Bailey Peacock-Farrell among the young stoppers hoping to crack the first team one day.

His task at Manchester United will not necessarily be easier, with Joel Pereira highly rated, and Aston Villa loanee Sam Johnstone in the queue behind Sergio Romero and David de Gea.
