The Celtic forward has been linked with a summer switch to Leeds United.
According to a report from the print edition of the Sun (24/05/17 page 72) Leeds United manager Garry Monk wants to make Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths his first summer signing.
On the face of it, that would be a huge coup for the Whites, desperate as they are to add another goal-scorer to their strike force and ease the pressure on New Zealand international Chris Wood.
But if the Scotland star does arrive at Elland Road this summer, it will be more important than ever for Leeds to also add more creativity in the centre of the park.
Strikers need chances to score goals and while Wood did remarkably well this season to notch 30, the players behind him have too often disappointed when it comes to strikes and assists of their own.
At his best, Pablo Hernandez is a superb creator, but he has been hit-and-miss this season and his return of eight assists will need to improve considerably if Leeds are to get the best out of any new striker that arrives in the coming months.
With no assists in his last nine appearances for Leeds, it is telling that Hernandez’s slump coincided with the club’s dramatic fall out of the play-off places, and the recent report from Voetbal International linking Leeds with set-piece maestro Mateusz Klich will have pleased those Whites fans seeking another creative catalyst.
If Griffiths arrives and replicates his best Celtic form he could go down a storm at Leeds, but Monk will know his midfield is the real issue and the right additions this summer could define his legacy at the club.
