Leeds United are reportedly interested in raiding Wolves to sign Hwang Hee-chan before the end of the transfer window – a player that the Bundesliga website has compared to Liverpool star Roberto Firmino, after his Leipzig spell.

Hwang, 26, has impressed during his first 12 months at Wolves. Joining the club initially on loan from Leipzig last summer, when Marsch was in charge of the Bundesliga club, Wolves made his loan permanent in January 2022.

Clocking up 35 appearances, he has scored five goals. Not massively incredible stats, but he has been used up front, out wide and as a 10 – coming off the bench in 11 of those 35. He has completed 90 minutes just five times.

So, it is clear that while his initial stats are hardly impressive – he needs a run of games. Indeed, his best-ever season came with Marsch in his final Salzburg season. He had a hand in a huge 38 goals in 40 games, earning a Leipzig move.

A player that Erling Haaland loves, the Bundesliga website gave their verdict on Hwang when he moved to Germany. They compared him to Firmino, giving an overall insight to Leipzig fans over how Hwang plays his football.

“Hwang is not dissimilar to Liverpool’s Firmino. Happy leading the line as part of either a duo or a front three, Leipzig’s first summer signing likes to get on the ball and has a trick or two up his sleeve to shake off a defender.

“Comfortable with both feet, with the strength to hold off an opponent and the pace to exploit space, he could cause problems for many a Bundesliga defence – just like Firmino did before him [in Germany],” the Bundesliga site, writes.

Leeds desperately need a striker. The game against Southampton, which Leeds drew 2-2, was proof of that. Patrick Bamford – who was injured for the majority of last season – went off with a problem. Joe Gelhardt was missing.

Now, it has seen Rodrigo lead the line and he has now scored four goals in three games. But, Leeds still need another body in the final third. A player that can play as a 10, a winger and of course, as a striker. Hwang does that.
