Leeds United are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Raphael Guerreiro – a player that Jude Bellingham once said “runs rings round everyone” in training, suggesting he is underrated.

Guerreiro, 28, is a surprise target for Leeds this summer. While interest in a left-back does not come as surprising, a possible move for the Euro 2016 winner and Portugal international would be an incredible coup for the Whites.

Having spent six years at Dortmund since joining in 2016, Guerreiro is in the final year of his contract. He has been a mainstay in the Dortmund side, clocking up 191 appearances in all competitions – having a hand in 71 goals.

Bought for £10million, Guerreiro is likely to be one of Dortmund’s best signings since the turn of the century. Speaking about the Leeds target in an interview with FourFourTwo in 2021, Bellingham was full of praise.

“The one player not many people recognise or talk about is Guerreiro. Honestly, he only plays with his left foot but some of the things he can do – his passing, his dribbling – he makes look easy. He runs rings around everyone.”

Leeds weighing up Guerreiro move: Bellingham said he is underrated

What a signing Guerreiro would be. A left-back that on his day, is up there with the best in world football. If Leeds could really tempt him with a move to Elland Road, it would be one of the deals of the summer window.

But ultimately, Guerreiro will feel Leeds are beneath him and rightly so. He is player that could easily slot into a Manchester City side, or one of the top six. A club that are in Champions League football, for sure.

Yes, Leeds have a chance given his contractual situation. The project of Leeds, the size of the club and the ability to give him a big contract. But unless Leeds are by themselves in the race for Guerreiro, it does seem unlikely.
