Newcastle United’s push for the Premier League title continued on Sunday afternoon as they picked up a 2-0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Magpies went into the game having won their previous seven Championship games, but with Leeds unbeaten in four league games and winning their last three, it had all the makings of a fascinating encounter.
Ultimately, Newcastle swept Garry Monk’s men aside much as they have with the rest of the division this season, as Dwight Gayle set them on their way to victory by pouncing on an error from goalkeeper Rob Green.
Green fumbled Jack Colback’s wayward cross on the goal line, and Gayle was there to gobble up the opportunity and give Newcastle a 1-0 lead.
Whilst Leeds ramped up the pressure after the break, with Eunan O’Kane forcing a smart save from Karl Darlow with a low drive, but Newcastle grabbed a second when Gayle slid in to score after neat approach play from Vurnon Anita and Ayoze Perez.
Leeds huffed and puffed but couldn’t get back into the game, meaning Newcastle have now won eight in a row, and Rafael Benitez is closing in on Kevin Keegan’s record of 13 league wins in a row.
Leeds will be disappointed with their display in front of a bumper 36,000 crowd at Elland Road, and below are some of the best images from the game.
An image Kalvin Phillips taking a corner kick showed just how packed Elland Road was, whilst Rob Green’s dejection was captured after his shocking error.
Dwight Gayle was pictured silencing the Leeds fans after his opening goal, whilst managers Rafael Benitez and Garry Monk shared a hand shake at full time as well.
