Leeds United sporting director Victor Orta said he doesn’t like to spend in January.
Leeds United’s slump in form has been so alarming that sporting director Victor Orta may be forced to rip up his initial January plan.
Leeds have lost six of their last seven matches and have dropped out of the play-off spots, having reached the top of the league a month ago.
Their lack of form is a big concern and January spending now looks essential.
But last month Orta said he did not like to spend mid-season unless he really had to. It already looks like doing so is a no-brainer.
Speaking to Leeds’ official Facebook page, Orta said that he will spend if he is required to.
He said: “I prefer to use the summer and use January for specific situations which will be solved.
“Hopefully in January we don’t sign a lot of players, this is a good sign our team is on a roll.”
At present it seems like more than just ‘specific situations’ and a minor tweak, Leeds need major surgery.
A new goalkeeper is likely needed, just months after signing Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan, and up front Pierre-Michel Lasogga is not entirely convincing.
Leeds just do not appear to have enough options on the bench capable of changing games, and this is letting them down in close matches.
Orta’s job is to provide a strong squad for manager Thomas Christiansen. With new signings Jay-Roy Grot an Pawel Cibicki flopping, it doesn’t appear Leeds have what they need.
