Leeds United have a number of exciting young players coming through their ranks right now and one of the very best is 17-year-old midfielder Jamie Shackleton.

The teenager is currently trying to make waves at under-23 level after an impressive pre-season campaign, and the quality of reinforcements for Leeds’ second string over the last few months means Shackleton’s own development could benefit as a consequence.

Leeds have brought in Oriol Rey, Adrian Balboa, Kun Temenuzhkov, Madger Gomes and Hugo Diaz to name a few and the majority of their new young prospects were previously on the books at clubs such as Barcelona, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

As a result, Shackleton will not find it easy to earn many starting spots for Leeds’ under-23s over the next few months. However his summer exploits during friendly matches proved what he is capable of and the increased competition for places may well get the best out of him.

Last season Leeds’ under-23s lost practically every match they kicked off, but this campaign looks set to be different and, if Shackleton ups his game to compete with the likes of Gomes and Kun, expect the youngster to be giving Thomas Christiansen plenty to think about.

Shackleton is the real deal and his new teammates could inadvertently fast-track his progress, which will only be a good thing for Leeds.
