Despite being loaned out, Thomas Christiansen suggests Mateusz Klich could have a Leeds United lifeline this summer.
Speaking to a press conference, streamed by Leeds United’s official Facebook page, Thomas Christiansen has addressed Mateusz Klich’s long-term future in West Yorkshire.
The Poland midfielder joined FC Utrecht on a half-season loan last week after struggling for regular football under Christiansen.
The 27-year-old had started only one Championship game since his £1.5 million switch from FC Twente back in June and the writing looked on the wall for some time.
Nevertheless, so long as he’s on loan then his Leeds career can’t be finished completely, and Christiansen refused to rule out the possibility of him returning to Thorp Arch this summer and ‘proving his worth’.
He told a press conference via United’s Facebook page when asked if he saw a future for Klich at Leeds: “Well if he’s on loan it means that he has the possibility to come back and prove his worth.”
It hasn’t been a brilliant return to the Netherlands so far, with Klich being an unsused substitute in Utrecht’s first two Eredivisie games – draws against Feyenoord and Ajax.
There is certainly talent there and he proved as much during Leeds’ League Cup win at Burnley back in September, but Christiansen has an abundance of central midfielders at his disposal and in hindsight it was always going to be tough to dislodge Eunan O’Kane, Ronaldo Vieira or Kalvin Phillips, who were big players for the Whites last season under Garry Monk.
