Leeds United were linked with a move for Serbian striker Aleksandar Prijovic in the transfer window and may regret not seizing their chance to sign him.
Prijovic has continued in fine form this season, and has netted 19 goals in all competitions.
The striker this week snubbed a move from China and was rewarded by being handed a new deal with PAOK.
But where it gets interesting from Leeds’ perspective is that Prijovic’s £8.8m release clause from his previous contract was carried forward into his new deal.
Often a new contract will give the club an opportunity to erase the release clause but Prijovic and his advisors have done well get this kept put.
So would Leeds pay it and should they?
Prijovic’s form suggests he would be worth the money, and if he features at the World Cup for Serbia this summer he could quickly justify it.
£8.8 million would be Leeds’ biggest fee of their post-Premier League era, but they have broken their previous benchmarks recently, paying £4.5 million for Adam Forshaw.
If Leeds have learned anything from Andrea Radrizzani’s first season in charge then it is that quality should outweigh quantity.
Radrizzani admitted this week Leeds have spent almost £20 million on signing players, but they have little to show for it, with many of the smaller deals yet to work out as successes.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga will be Leeds priority if they can re-sign him, but if Hamburg are unwilling to sanction his sale then spending big on Prijovic is still an option.
