Leeds United’s reported Bielsa back-up in frame for high profile job

Leeds United were reportedly interested in Matias Almeyda.

Leeds United’s back-up plan to Marcelo Bielsa is in the frame to land a high profile job of his own.

The Yorkshire Evening post reported before Bielsa’s appointment that Argentine boss Matias Almeyda was being considered as the fall back option.

Almeyda was league winner in Mexico with Chivas, and now he is in line to take the Mexico national job.

Mexican outlet SDP Noticias report Almeyda is on the shortlist to lead El Tri, after their World Cup 2018 adventure faltered in the last 16 once again.

Another Mexican news source, Superlider, claims Almeyda actually snubbed an offer from Leeds.

Either way it appears Almeyda is close to being snapped up, which Leeds hope will ultimately become irrelevant news if Bielsa is a big success.

Fans though are getting nervous over a lack of signings from the Whites, given Marcelo Bielsa’s recent history; he quit Lazio after two days, having failed to land any transfer targets.

If the worst case scenario did happen, Leeds would have to hope Almeyda is still available, but the way it is currently looking, he probably won’t be.
