The Leeds United defender is a cut above their other options.
There is no question that Leeds United have signed an Elland Road superstar in the form of Pontus Jansson, but the club’s results in the Swede’s absence suggest they still have work to do if they secure a return to the top flight next season.
Jansson was missing for the Championship clash with Cardiff City and, despite having home advantage, Leeds were put to the sword, losing 2-0 and seeing their play-off hopes take a dent in the process.
Rewind just a few weeks and Jansson was serving a two-match suspension with Leeds scheduled to play Derby County and Barnsley.
Garry Monk’s side overcame the Rams 1-0 but a defensive capitulation against Barnsley saw Leeds lose 3-2, raising questions over the quality of the back-up options at Elland Road.
Unsurprisingly given Jansson’s quality, Kyle Bartley looks far more confident and effective when playing alongside the Sweden international, while Liam Cooper continues to raise questions as to his suitability as immediate back-up.
If Leeds are a Premier League side next season, they will be facing far better strikers than they are currently, and unless Jansson plays every single match they would be wise to sign another player with similar leadership qualities in the close season.
The problem is: that is easier said than done.
