Leeds United started the 2019/20 Championship season in an emphatic fashion after they comfortably beat Bristol City.
Patrick Bamford has lauded the qualities of Pablo Hernandez after he helped Leeds United to a stunning 3-1 opening day victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Striker Bamford stated that his goal was crucial for ‘confidence’, especially with the potential departure of teammate Kemar Roofe before deadline day.
Sky Sports are reporting that Roofe is close to agreeing on a move to Belgian top-tier side Anderlecht, who are managed by former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany.
Speaking to Sky Sports Football (04/08/2019), Bamford praised his teammate Hernandez and commented on Roofe’s potential exit from Elland Road.
On Hernandez’s first goal: “It was nice,” Bamford told Sky Sports Football. “Anything that hits the top corner, it is always nice to see. He’s just starting off from where he left off last year, so it’s brilliant.
On how much responsibility on his shoulders with Roofe seemingly leaving: “It’s nice for any striker to start with a goal. I think it’s important for confidence and stuff, but certainly in terms of pressure, last year it’s on the team really after what we did. We just have to try and come back stronger and show what we can do again.”
That performance from Leeds was much-needed because after the summer they have had they needed their football to do the talking on the field of play – and they did that in emphatic fashion.
Added with that, Bamford getting on the scoresheet is crucial because he had added pressure on his shoulders from last season and Roofe’s exit will only make his presence even more important.
But the standout display from Bielsa’s side at Ashton Gate, against a team that has ambitions of promotion, is a positive and very early sign that things are looking good.
