The Leeds United youngster started on the wing against Newport County this week.

When Leeds United signed Madger Gomes earlier this summer, the former Liverpool teenager looked set to continue his development in the Whites’ under-23 side.

However, after some fine showings for the first-team in pre-season, the 20-year-old got 20 minutes in the EFL Cup victory against Port Vale and played the full match in the second round tie with Newport County earlier this week.

So how did he get on?

In an unfamiliar left wing position Gomes worked hard throughout, even if his delivery was suspect at times, and in the early stages especially he looked the most exciting attacking option for Thomas Christiansen’s side.

Against a suspect right-back the Leeds youngster should have done more to exploit Newport’s weakness, with the same being said of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, but on early evidence Gomes is ready to seize each and every opportunity that comes his way.

While he models his game on Steven Gerrard, Gomes is clearly willing to play in new positions as he bids to make a name for himself at Leeds, and in time he should get plenty of goals for the Whites, with one chance in particular creeping narrowly wide on Tuesday evening.

With the confidence and the innate talent to ultimately become an integral player for Leeds, the club’s fans should enjoy watching him develop. He is the real deal, and in a few years he should be one of the first names on the team sheet.
