Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips has revealed to BBC Sport that Raheem Sterling joked with him straight after his goal for England yesterday.
Phillips found Sterling with a great pass to claim his first assist for his country and cap off a brilliant display.
Sterling could not resist taking a pop at the Leeds man straight after his goal though.
And Phillips said: “It’s a nice feeling. Raheem said as soon as we finished celebrating that it’s the first time I’ve looked at him and found him with a pass since i’ve been coming to England!
“So it’s a nice feeling, and a great feeling to get an assist and get the three points.”
Phillips cements his place
Phillips may not have had the chance to link up with Sterling for England as much as he did yesterday, in fairness to the Leeds man.
Gareth Southgate gave Phillips more freedom to break forward than he usually gets in an England shirt and he thrived.
The Leeds man was arguably the Three Lions’ Man of the Match, as he proved Southgate correct for picking him.
Many England supporters had questioned the logic of putting Phillips into the starting line-up.
However, his brilliant display has surely cemented his place in the line-up for Friday evening, when England take on Scotland.
