Mateusz Klich has barely featured for Leeds United since signing from FC Twente and could be pushed further down the pecking order by James Jeggo.

The last thing Mateusz Klich needs right now is more competition in midfield at Leeds United.

The Polish international promised much when arriving at Elland Road this summer after a fine season with FC Twente in Holland but has struggled to make a positive impression so far.

Klich has started just one Championship game and marked it with a crucial error, slipping in possession to set Kenneth Zohore up for the opening goal in a 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City in September.

And Klich has played only once in the last month, starting Tuesday’s EFL Cup loss to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

With Kalvin Phillips and Eunan O’Kane ahead of him in the pecking order, and highly-rated teenager Ronaldo Vieira finally making his first start of the league season in Saturday’s win at Bristol City, the 27-year-old has a mountain to climb to force his way into Thomas Christiansen’s first XI.

And that challenge will get even steeper if Leeds sign Sturm Graz midfielder James Jeggo in the January transfer window. The Mail reported on Thursday that the Australian is on the radar of Championship trio Leeds, Hull City and Middlesbrough and, as his contract with the Austrian club expires in the summer, will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement in January.

25-year-old Jeggo, named the A-League’s Young Player of the Year in 2014/15 while at Adelaide United, would add further depth to Christiansen’s central midfield options.

Klich, therefore, could find himself even further away from the starting XI if Jeggo arrives either in January or at the end of the season.
