The player swapped Leeds United for Barnsley earlier this year but he looks well off the pace as things stand.

Leeds' Alex Mowatt scores their second goal

Not long ago, the future looked very bright for Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt. But things took a turn for the worse soon after and having falling down the pecking order at Elland Road, the 20-year-old swapped the Whites for Championship rivals Barnsley.

Mowatt will have been hoping his January switch kick-started a career that had stalled since his initial breakthrough. However things have not gone according to plan thus far and it seems the former Leeds man may have to wait until next season to put his footballing woes behind him.

As if being sent off on his Barnsley debut was not enough, Mowatt’s subsequent three-match suspension meant he was facing an uphill battle to get back into the squad having only just arrived.

So it proved, with Mowatt managing only 10 minutes against Brighton & Hove Albion before a woeful performance against Huddersfield Town saw him quickly dropped from the starting line-up for the following match against Derby County.

Looking off the pace and well below his best, there is a real chance that Barnsley fans will not see the best of Mowatt until next season, at which point he will have a full pre-season under his belt.

As things stand, the disappointment of his time at Leeds appears to be hanging over him, with a lack of minutes and a distinct lack of confidence both playing a part in his awful form.

Some Leeds fans could not believe Mowatt was shipped out so cheaply rather than being offered a new contract, but for now at least the risk appears to be all Barnsley’s.
