From the Theatre of Dreams to a nightmare loan spell at Leeds United so far, but Cameron Borthwick-Jackson can turn it around.

Many of Leeds United’s pre-season recruits have gone down a storm with the fans.

Samu Saiz and Egzjan Alioski could walk into any pub in the area and not have to buy a drink all night. Vurnon Anita looks like one of the best Bosman deals done by any club in the Championship. Mateusz Klich has offered glimpses into his excellent talent, and Matthew Pennington, when he has played, has looked a fine addition.

One man who fans haven’t seen a great deal of is Manchester United loanee Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, who has made just the one Championship appearance since joining the Elland Road club last month.

At the moment, it does not look like the 20-year-old defender – who hasn’t even made the squad for a league game since August – will play a major role in Leeds’ campaign this season, but he need only look at one of his team-mates to know that it is possible to fight his way back into contention.

Before Leeds’ League Cup win at Burnley, Hadi Sacko was in a near-identical position to Borthwick-Jackson, but the French winger was recalled to the squad for Tuesday’s midweek defeat by Cardiff City and although he didn’t come off the bench, the former Sporting Lisbon man is clearly going in the right direction.

By bringing him back into a matchday squad for a Championship match, head coach Thomas Christiansen has proven that he is willing to meet his players’ halfway if they want to be involved.

Borthwick-Jackson must bide his time and prove that, like Sacko, he does want a part to play.
