Leeds United have signed Adam Forshaw.
Leeds United have moved for Middlesbrough’s Adam Forshaw, and while the fee may seem inconsequential by today’s sums, it is a big one for the Whites.
Middlesbrough declared the transfer fee could reach £4.5 million for the midfielder.
This would be the biggest fee spent by Leeds United in more than a decade, in fact going back to when they were in the Premier League.
Leeds were relegated to the Championship in 2004, and had not paid much over £3 million for any player during this period, with deals for Samu Saiz and Kemar Roofe the biggest.
The last time Leeds spent more than £4 million on a player was in 2001, when they paid £11 million for Robbie Fowler and £7 million for Seth Johnson.
Adam Forshaw’s signing represents a gradual escalation by the Whites in the fees they are now able to pay out, helped by the £15 million sale of Chris Wood.
While the move is a lot for Leeds, £4.5 million for Forshaw could still be a bargain.
The midfielder is familiar with the Championship and has won promotion with Middlesbrough.
Boro fans may be feeling like they have got the better deal, but Forshaw is worth what Leeds are willing to pay.
Just 18 months ago he was being tipped for an England call up, and if he proves the missing cog for Leeds and helps them secure a play-off place, he will be worth every penny paid.
