Former Leeds managerial target finally lands new job.
Leeds United shocked the football world by hiring Marcelo Bielsa as manager this summer.
It wasn’t easy, with negotiations between Leeds and the Argentine dragging on for more than a fortnight.
As a result, Leeds reportedly had one of Bielsa’s former players lined up as a back-up plan.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that former midfielder Matias Almeyda was Leeds’ fall-back option, after a successful stint coaching in Mexico.
Almeyda has remained on the market for the past few months, having left Chivas early in the summer.
He has now finally found a new job, after being unveiled at MLS side San Jose Earthquakes yesterday.
An unlikely move to England has now passed him by for now, but Almeyda is still young for a coach at 44.
Bielsa has enjoyed a terrific start at Leeds meanwhile, managing the club through an early injury crisis to sit third in the league.
Leeds fans wouldn’t swap him for anybody right now.
