Leeds United were this weekend linked with an ambitious deal to sign whizkid Emi Buendia.

The Sun (17/9 p63) reported that the Getafe owned attacker is interesting the Whites, having come to their attention on loan to partner side Cultural Leonesa.

The 20-year-old is an exciting talent, and one who has lofty idols.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS earlier this year, Buendia said he aspired to be like two of his country’s recent top stars.

Buendia responded when quizzed about his idols: “Today Messi and when I was little, Aimar.

“I like his technical quality, freedom, talent. Playing against Messi was a dream at the Camp Nou.

“Hopefully one I day have the opportunity to play in the team Argentina and share the pitch with him.”

Leeds have never come up against Messi but did come up against Pablo Aimar’s Valencia during their European campaigns in the early 2000s.

Buendia may take some convincing that Leeds is the right club to achieve his dreams, given that the profile in La Liga with Getafe is even greater when his loan ends.

Yet this summer the Whites were able to attract academy stars from Real Madrid and Barcelona, and should feel they at least have a chance of persuading the talented attacker to join.
