Young Leeds United striker Eoghan Stokes scored a brace for the club’s under-23 side last night in a 4-3 win over their Bolton Wanderers counterparts.

Stokes, 20, signed a new one-year extension deal with the club in June, and is determined to make this season count.

He featured for the first team in pre-season, and has spent time training with the first team squad.

Fellow young forward Frank Mulhern was recently sent on loan to Southport to get first team opportunities, meaning Stokes is the next in line should anything happen to any of Leeds United’s first choice strikers.

Chris Wood is the club’s top scorer this season with seven goals to his name, while summer signing Marcus Antonsson is keeping him on his toes.

He has just two goals so far, but he is very much part of head coach Garry Monk’s plans.

Beyond those two, Leeds are short of options, but given that they only play one up front, this has not been a major problem so far for the club.

In case of injury, Leeds could be stretched in this position. Kemar Roofe could play up front rather than out wide, but Stokes is doing himself plenty of favours by getting on the scoresheet for the under-23s.

Last night saw him figure in the same line-up as Gaetano Berardi, returning from injury, and former first team stars Luke Murphy and Toumani Diagouraga.

Leeds could look to bring in a new striker in January, which gives Stokes a limited opportunity to try and force his way in.

The Republic of Ireland youth international’s goals last night could have been a tipping point.
