Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has told The Mirror that extra preparation is the reason for the club’s success this season.

Leeds are top of the Championship after 24 games, after failing to even mount a promotion challenge last season.

The difference is manager Marcelo Bielsa, whose meticulous planning has paid off.

Before he took charge at Leeds, Bielsa was said to have watched hours of tape of Leeds matches from 2017/18. It sounded like an arduous task, but it has paid off.

Jansson is in his third season at Leeds and is playing a key role.

Jansson said: “Certainly, I have a bigger belief in this team than in the last two years. We have better players who are stronger and we are more prepared for the games.

“I believe a lot in Marcelo and his staff and how they prepare us for matches. We are treating every game as a World Cup final.

“That’s what you have to do in this league.”

Leeds are in their best position in England’s second tier at this stage than in any season since their relegation.

Failure to win promotion from here would be viewed as a massive disappointment.

Leeds’ quest continues at home this weekend against 15th placed Hull City.
