The Sun reported that Leeds rejected a £27 million offer for Phillips in the summer, with five clubs interested.
Phillips was outstanding in Leeds’ victory over QPR, with the Whites winning 2-0 to end the weekend in second place.
It is easy to forget that Phillips is just 23-years-old. He plays with the intelligence of a veteran, who has been performing in Marcelo Bielsa’s system for years.
He anchors the midfield and shields the defence, while also being the creative fulcrum of Leeds’ attack.
Leeds have the best defence in the Championship and Phillips’ midfield role is a key reason why.
Against QPR it was a rare game where Leeds did not dominate possession against an opponent, with Leeds only managing 49 per cent, low by their standards.
Phillips was key to ensuring that Leeds used their share wisely.
He managed more touches (56) than any midfield player on the pitch, with the exception of teammate Stuart Dallas (58).
Phillips completed 90 per cent of his passes – compared to 77 per cent from Dallas.
He also managed to create four goalscoring chances, the rest of Leeds team managed eight combined.
Defensively Phillips made three tackles, the joint highest of any Leeds player along with Mateusz Klich.
He also contributed with two interceptions, more than any other midfielder at Elland Road on Saturday.
When Phillips plays like this, Leeds have a big advantage over their opponents.
Other teams may not agree with Leeds’ valuation that Phillips is worth over £30 million, but to them, he is priceless and you can’t put a figure on what he contributes to their team.
