Chelsea-owned Leeds United midfielder Lewis Baker has told The Yorkshire Evening Post that the 2017-18 season was tough for him.

Baker, who has joined Championship side Leeds on a season-long loan deal from Premier League outfit Chelsea in the summer transfer window, spent the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Middlesbrough.

The 23-year-old played quite regularly when former Leeds head coach Garry Monk was in charge of Middlesbrough, but the midfielder struggled for playing time after Tony Pulis become the Boro boss.

The Englishman – who earns £20,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac.com – has admitted that last season was a struggle for him.

Baker told The Yorkshire Evening Post: “It was a difficult season. Obviously I went there and the manager saw something else in me. It’s his opinion, it’s my opinion but that’s fine.

“It’s part and parcel of football and it’s not always going to go up. It’s like a rollercoaster ride as it may sound. It taught me a lot anyway because it focused me more.

“It made me stronger mentally so all in all I wouldn’t say it was a bad season. It was a season for learning different things.”

Succeeding at Leeds United

Baker is a very good and talented midfielder, and Leeds fans should be looking forward to watching the 23-year-old in action at Elland Road next season.

Having turned out for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, Baker will not be fazed by the demands and expectations of Leeds.

The Whites will be aiming to finish in the top six of the Championship next season and stand a chance of getting promoted to the Premier League.
