This week has seen former Leeds United midfielder Stephen McPhail take the next step in his career. He recently announced his retirement from the game but has now taking up a role as the club’s sporting director.

Speaking about the appointment the 36-year-old stated to the club’s official website:

“When I was first approached by the board a few weeks ago to see if I may be interested in taking up the role of sporting director I was hugely impressed by what they had to say.

“With all this in mind I felt compelled to take the club up on its offer and I am really looking forward to getting started. My aim is to help improve every facet of Shamrock Rovers for its future success.”

So, should Leeds United look to benefit from this new arrangement?

Leeds would be wise to consider using their connection with McPhail to form a partnership with Shamrock over young players.

Leeds have plenty of young talent coming through the ranks and, in the past and present, those are often from Ireland.

Leeds should consider the idea of loaning out these players to the Irish team – instead of sending them to the lower leagues in England.

Shamrock Rovers are one of the biggest teams in Ireland and whilst the quality is not the same the competitiveness is just as high. Playing in a team expected to win on a regular basis would bring with it new pressures for the players concerned.

Leeds United may have an opportunity to hear to form a profitable partnership. Hopefully it is something that comes under consideration.
