Leeds United are looking to catch Sheffield United in the race for a top six space.
Chris Wilder’s angry comments about Sheffield United’s promotion chances may just be music to Leeds United’s fans’ ears.
Leeds’ chances of promotion this season looked slim, but an up-turn in form more recently has led to suggestions that they could just catch the top six.
Leeds will have to put together a very strong run of results between now and the end of the campaign to break into the play off spots.
However, Sheffield United appear to be in make-or-break mode right now.
Wilder has written off his Blades side from making the top six, after seeing them lose 1-0 to Hull City.
“I’ve been going on about trying to get into the top six but looking at that I must be off my head,” he said to the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“I must be away with the fairies. That was the biggest game of the season by a million miles and we’ve not turned up. We’ll try and have a strong end to the season but Friday has shown that we’re short and don’t have enough to get in the top six.”
Wilder’s comments obviously could be a motivational tactic, but they appear a last resort, and Leeds’ task will now be to keep their heads and capitalise on any slip ups from their play off rivals.
Bristol City, who currently occupy sixth spot, have hardly looked unbeatable recently.
And Leeds’ must be delighted, when they read Wilder’s frustrated comments, as they could yet have a chance of chasing down the top six yet, if the Blades do slip away.
