Leeds United have a decision to make over Alex Mowatt.

Leeds United attacker Alex Mowatt is the subject of interest from Championship rivals Barnsley, the Yorkshire Evening Post report.

Mowatt was Leeds’ player of the year in 2014/15 but has struggled under three consecutive managers since Neil Redfearn was let go.

This season he has played second fiddle to Pablo Hernandez, and has not really taken advantage of the opportunities which he has been given. A close range goal earlier this month against League Two Cambridge was little to hang your hat on.

Mowatt is clearly a talent who Leeds should try to get the best out of, but there are two conditions on which they should sell him.

Wait until summer

Leeds have not brought in any extra players this transfer window and would find it difficult to replace Mowatt at this late stage.

The team have other priorities to look at, which include signing an extra striker, and potentially another defender and a winger.

Mowatt is ideal cover in attacking midfield, and could have a crucial role to play down the stretch.

Only if promotion is achieved

If Alex Mowatt is failing to earn a regular spot in the Leeds team now, then it will be even more difficult for him next season should Garry Monk’s side win promotion.

A leap in quality will require improvement, and its uncertain if Mowatt is capable of taking that next step.

Crucially Leeds would be required to invest in the team in order to build a side who can compete and survive in the Premier League, and Mowatt could find himself squeezed out to the extent that he fails to make the matchday 18.

If Leeds remain in the Championship, then they should keep Mowatt around as cover, in the knowledge that on his day he can be a contributor in the second tier.
