With Matthew Pennington only on loan from Everton, Leeds United will have to explore signing another centre-back next summer.

One option who could benefit under-fire goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald is his former Werder Bremen teammate Milos Veljkovic.

Leeds attempted to sign Veljkovic in 2015 from Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal, before the move fell through with the Whites unable to guarantee to the North London side that he would be a regular starter, the Yorkshire Post reported.

Veljkovic quit Tottenham months later to sign with German side Werder Bremen, where he has gone onto make 38 first team appearances.

Leeds should not worry about whether they can attract the 23-year-old – recent acquisitions of Wiedwald and Lasogga suggest they can lure established Bundesliga talents.

Veljkovic is a player whose potential is still being tapped into. He played in the same Tottenham youth team as Harry Kane and Nabil Bentaleb, and is finding his own way to the top.

In 2015 he was a key part of Serbia’s under-20 World Cup winning side, although is still awaiting a first cap at senior level.

He could be particularly useful to Leeds due to his ability to play as a defensive midfielder and shield the back four, an area in which they have recently been found wanting.

He certainly fits the profile of young, talented players who Andrea Radrizzani is keen to bring to Leeds, and strong performances at Bremen between now and next summer could see him re-emerge on the club’s radar.
