Southampton defender Jason McCarthy could be an ideal addition at Leeds United.

According to The Sun, Barnsley have agreed a £200,000 fee for Southampton defender Jason McCarthy – in what looks to be an excellent deal.

Barnsley have acted quickly to attempt to snap up the 21-year-old, but Leeds United should make sure that their Yorkshire rivals do not have a clear run to sign the defender.

Leeds need to add a centre-back this summer, with their options limited in the position currently.

The Whites’ have failed to retain Kyle Bartley on a permanent transfer, meaning their only options in the centre of defence are currently Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson.

It means that Leeds’ new manager, whoever that is, will surely be looking to sign a centre-back, and McCarthy could represent a bargain buy.

McCarthy won Walsall’s Player of the Season award last season, and looks very capable of making an impression at a higher level.

And Andrea Radrizzani would be wise to act, to ensure that Leeds don’t miss out on the opportunity to complete a potentially excellent deal.
