Ahead of their match with Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, Leeds United will be thanking their lucky stars they did not pursue interest in one the Owls’ talents.

HITC Sport reported in July that Leeds were considering a move for Wednesday playmaker Almen Abdi.

The former Watford ace has had an inconsistent spell at Hillsborough, and he remained at Sheffield Wednesday this summer with Leeds going on to focus their attentions elsewhere.

Abdi, 30, made just 11 starts for Wednesday last season and his 2017/18 campaign has not gone to plan either.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal selected Abdi in just one Championship fixture, and twice in the Carabao Cup.

Carvalhal told the Sheffield Star a fortnight ago that Abdi is now nursing two new injuries and is out of action.

This led to Owls fans lambasting the attacker as ‘one of their worst ever signings’, having paid Watford £3 million for his services a year earlier.

Abdi has talent and helped Watford win promotion three seasons ago, and a change of scene could have been precisely what he needed.

Fortunately for Leeds they did not take the gamble, and do not have Abdi in their treatment room.
