Jean-Kevin Augustin has hit the headlines once again after Leeds United were ordered to pay the Frenchman £24.5m in compensation.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Leeds after their 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday, as the disastrous loan agreement from back in January 2020 causes further problems.

The Athletic believe Augustin took his case to FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber, who found partially in his favour.

So – after Leeds were ordered to part with a significant sum of money – let’s see where the striker ranks amongst the club’s record signings at Elland Road.

Jean-Kevin Augustin becomes No.1 at Leeds United

Well – technically speaking – Augustin is now the record signing at Leeds.

The £24.5m compensation order for a breach of contract means Leeds have now spent £40m on the man who made just three appearances for them in the 2019/20 campaign.

Leeds were told to pay the full £18m owed to RB Leipzig for the permanent signing of Augustin, but later reached a £15.5m settlement with the German side.

So, that agreement – plus the £24.5m owed to Augustin for breaching his contract – means Leeds have now spent £40m in total on what turned out to be a failed loan deal.

You can see where that puts the 25-year-old in the list of record signings at Elland Road.

  1. Jean-Kevin Augustin (£40m)
  2. Georginio Rutter (£35.5m)
  3. Rodrigo (£27m)
  4. Daniel James (£25m)
  5. Brenden Aaronson (£24.7m)

Victor Orta surely finds himself answering a lot of questions today – the deal for Augustin may go down as one of the worst agreements in football history.

The Paris-born striker only made three appearances for Leeds, as aforesaid, which totalled just 48 minutes.

Augustin failed to score or provide an assist, and Marcelo Bielsa would have still led Leeds to the Championship title without the Frenchman – it was an utterly pointless deal, which has now cost those in Yorkshire millions.
