Leeds United face a battle to sign Gustavo Hamer with Fulham now joining the race for the Coventry City midfielder.

Fulham are lining Leeds United in chasing Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer this summer.

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, who has taken to Twitter to report Fulham’s interest in Hamer.

Sheth claims that there is no official bid on the table just yet but Fulham are interested in landing the Dutchman.

Hamer is now inside the final year of his Coventry contract and interested clubs will be trying to tempt the Sky Blues into selling.

That won’t be easy, especially with Coventry now doubt hoping to go one better this coming season after losing the Championship playoff final.

Premier League action may be appealing to Hamer right now though and Fulham’s interest will be a blow to Leeds United.

The Athletic report that Leeds have an interest in signing Hamer this summer as they seek to retool their midfield.

The Whites could lose Tyler Adams and Marc Roca this summer so adding a proven Championship player like Hamer could be absolutely ideal – but they must now fend off Fulham.

Coventry City likely to be difficult for Leeds United to deal with in Gustavo Hamer chase

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has been speaking about Leeds’ interest in Hamer having been the one to first report the news.

Hay has told The Square Ball Podcast that Leeds ‘really like’ Hamer and would be keen to lure him to Elland Road.

Hay noted that Coventry are ‘unlikely to be hugely helpful’ in Leeds’ pursuit though as they won’t want to sell to a Championship rival.

A comparison was made to how Coventry kept hold of star striker Viktor Gyokeres in January, refusing to sell him.

That nearly worked out perfectly for Coventry as they narrowly lost out to Luton Town in the Championship playoff final.

Coventry won’t want to sell Hamer but he has been on the Leeds radar for a ‘long time’ according to Hay.

“They do really like him. Goals, assists, very talented and I think his contract is up in 2024, but what you know is when you start dealing with Championship clubs, unless you’re talking about players they actively want to move on, they’re unlikely to be hugely helpful.

“In the same way that, although they were in a different division then, Coventry were not in anyway cooperate with Gyokeres in January. They were adamant he was staying, it was the very decision, got them to the play-off final and very nearly got them promoted. Hamer is somebody they’ve liked for a long time,” he added.

The slight difference here is that Hamer is now inside the final year of his contract where Gyokeres was only at 18 months away from becoming a free agent.

Gyokeres is on his way to Sporting now with Coventry cashing in, whilst it will be difficult to snub big offers for Hamer knowing he can leave for free in a year.

Leeds will hope that Coventry can be tempted into a deal but fending off Fulham will be a task in itself.
