Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has admitted to the Yorkshire Evening Post that Marcelo Bielsa is ‘very strange’ in the way he works.

Bielsa has been back working with Leeds’ players in training this week, as the Champions leaders step up their preparations for a return to action.

Much of Leeds’ training has, as expected, been focused around their fitness work.

But Phillips says that Leeds’ squad actually had very little contact directly with Bielsa over the break.

“It was literally over WhatsApp,” he said, when asked how Leeds’ players learnt that they would be returning to training.

“We’d had a few phone calls. The manager is very strange in the way he works, he doesn’t come to you personally he just goes through his staff.

“They got in touch and said we had a certain group of a few players who would train at this time, we’re not allowed in the building, we’ve got to turn up to training ready to train and then respect all the guidelines.”

Phillips is one of Leeds players to benefit from Bielsa’s methods the most at Elland Road.

The 24-year-old has developed into a vital player for Leeds, and is now regarded as one of the best players in the Championship.

Phillips’s form will be key to Leeds over the remainder of the campaign, as they look to earn a return back to the Premier League.

As things stand Leeds are seven points clear of third placed Fulham in the Championship table, and are in a strong position to go on and secure promotion.
