Will the Leeds United owner honor his promise and make the Chris Wood money available?
It’s hard to argue that Leeds United have missed Chris Wood so far this season.
By all accounts Leeds remain a better side than they were last term in spite of a few recent poor results and it is testament to how good Thomas Christiansen has done.
The Whites are now fifth after sitting pretty at the top of the Championship for a couple of weeks and you get the feeling that they will need to strengthen in January in order to maintain what has been a very strong promotion push thus far.
The Elland Road club picked up around £18 million for Wood (according to The Independent) and owner Andrea Radrizzani pledged that the “monies generated from the sale of Chris Wood will be reinvested” back into the playing staff, via the club’s official website.
United have only spent around £2.75 million since that statement – on Jay-Roy Grot and Pawel Cibicki – so could Director of Football Victor Orta have some £15 million to spend when the transfer window re-opens in January?
You would hope so because Leeds do have weaknesses in the squad. Of course, there is no need to go gung-ho and spend the entire thing – even half that represents a decent budget for a Championship club in January – but reinforcements could be key.
Radrizzani can do no wrong at the moment. To Leeds fans he is the perfect owner and he will certainly consolidate that perception if he gives Orta the Wood money. If he doesn’t then it might indicate that he has a tiny bit more in common with predecessor Massimo Cellino than he is letting on.
