Leeds United were interested in signing Chris Wood but the Newcastle United striker looks set to sign for Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.
That’s according to 90Min, who claim that Leeds have enquired about a possible deal to bring Wood back to Elland Road.
Newcastle have allegedly told Wood that he is free to leave St James’ Park this month, sparking a real race for his signature.
It’s stated that Leeds have made contact whilst Bournemouth, Everton and Southampton have also shown a real interest.
Yet it looks like Nottingham Forest will win the race as they are in talks over a loan deal with the option of a permanent move in the summer.
The injury problems of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak make this decision a little surprising from Newcastle’s perspective.
Wood was always bound to attract Premier League interest but Leeds will need to make a big push if they still want Wood.
How did Chris Wood fare in his first Leeds United spell?
Wood joined Leeds from Leicester City back in 2015.
The New Zealand striker had long been tipped for a big future at West Bromwich Albion having shown promise on loan at Barnsley, Brighton, Birmingham, Bristol City, Millwall and Leicester.
Wood never really nailed down a key role for Leicester though and Leeds were happy to swoop in.
Wood smashed 44 goals in 88 games for Leeds, hitting that much-desired record of a goal in every other game.
Burnley swooped to sign Wood in 2017, hitting 53 goals in 165 games before joining Newcastle in January of last year.
The Magpies paid £25million for Wood but he has managed just five goals in 39 games.
The 31-year-old is now available again and Leeds seemingly looked into bringing him back to Elland Road.
Yet it now feels unlikely that Wood will end up back at Leeds – and not just because a move to Forest looks close.
Leeds just signed a striker in Georginio Rutter and the Whites surely won’t be going in for another right now, with Wood surely off to Forest now.
