Leeds need to be proactive in January.

Leeds United’s thin depth at centre-back was highlighted against Millwall without captain Liam Cooper.

Cooper has improved under Marcelo Bielsa, and struck up a partnership with loanee Ben White.

But Leeds have to start planning ahead, with a signing for the here and now, and next season.

A new centre-back is needed, on a permanent deal.

Ben White has outperformed even the most optimistic view of his signing.

He has looked rock solid, been composed in possession, and generally looks a class act. So why would Brighton consider selling him?

If Leeds fail to win promotion, it’s all over.

If they do manage to reach the Premier League, a move might be viable, dependent on finances and both club’s assessment of White’s value. Brighton could still make it difficult.

Leeds have be pragmatic and assume at this point White will not be in their squad for the 2020/21 season, and if he is, then it is a bonus.

Victor Orta and his recruitment team need to be shopping around now for a centre-back who is capable of playing at Premier League level.

Signing one in January puts Leeds in a strong position for the summer, with a new addition already in the bag, White’s potential replacement – or partner.

It could help Leeds this season too. Leeds need another centre-back to strengthen their options. It could make the difference in the promotion race.
