Leeds United move to sign Mbakogu under threat from Udinese

Leeds United have a deal in the works to sign Jerry Mbakogu this summer, but they are not his only option.

Leeds United’s summer move for Jerry Mbakogu is under threat as Serie A side Udinese hover.

Multiple reports in Italy are claiming the Carpi striker has been lined up for a switch to Udinese, with Tuttomercatoweb, Sportal, and Virgilio Sport all citing the print edition of Il Gazzatino.

Striker Mbakogu has reportedly emerged as an option for Udinese, who sit 12th in Serie A. The report suggests they could strike a deal worth three million Euros.

Leeds United scouted Mbakogu late in the transfer window and The Mail reported last month that the Whites have him in their sights for a summer move.

The Nigerian was claimed to have applied for a dual Italian passport, to avoid having to apply for a work permit upon any potential move to England.

Mabkogu may prefer to want to remove that complication if he can by staying in Italy, and signing for Udinese where he could get a crack at playing in Serie A.

Blessing in disguise?

While this may disrupt Leeds’ transfer plans, this might be a blessing in disguise.

Mbakogu has not scored since February 1 and is now suffering with a knee injury.

He has only six goals in Serie B this season, which is hardly prolific, and he has no experience of the English game.

He would arrive with a big point to prove and considering the club’s failed gambles on players this season, Leeds fans would rather see a different option signed to lead the line.
