Leeds United’s injuries on opening weekend make move for free agent even more crucial.

Leeds United’s defence was already stretched at the weekend before the injuries sustained against Bolton Wanderers.

Left-back Gaetano Berardi and centre-back loanee Matthew Pennington were both forced off early.

It is as yet unclear how much time they could miss, but even if they make swift recoveries it is a warning shot across the bow for Thomas Christiansen’s side.

Right now, Leeds United can take action while the transfer window is open to sign players, but the smartest solution could be a free agent – who they can’t afford to hang around for.

Swiss outlet RTS reported on Friday that Leeds had made contact with former FC Sion defender Reto Ziegler.

Ziegler has played in top flights in Italy, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and in England with Tottenham, and so has considerable experience.

Even at 31 he has plenty to offer, scoring eight times from 25 appearances for Sion last season as a centre-back.

He is best remembered in English football by playing as a left-back, and his ability to play dual positions is vitally important to Leeds.

These are the two positions in which the Whites suffered injuries at the weekend, and signing him up on a free transfer seems the perfect solution and of increased importance.

The defender does not have to be an automatic first choice although he is very capable of it, having captained Sion last season he could be a strong partner for Pontus Jansson.

On a free transfer there is very little risk, and even with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson arriving at left-back on loan, getting in another player who can play centre-back so Leeds don’t have to rely on youngster Conor Shaughnessy could be crucial to their promotion hopes.
