The striker instead switched Bristol Rovers for Bristol City.

Today has seen a shock move in Bristol. Bristol Rovers’ top-scorer Matty Taylor has left the club to head across the divide and join Bristol City – the first player to make the switch in 30 years.

It is a shock move and one that has cost City just £300,000, according to The Independent. That was the release clause in his contract and it must be said that it’s a surprise more Championship sides were not knocking on the door.

Leeds United in particular.

The Whites need a new striker to give support to current star Chris Wood. Taylor certainly knows where the goal is. He has scored 19 times in 33 games this season and netted 28 in League Two last term. His combined tally of 52 goals since the start of last season makes him the most potent finisher in English football.

He was available for just £300,000 and Leeds did not make a move, despite previous interest.

In the summer, according to the Bristol Post, he rejected an offer from Leeds among others to sign a new deal at the Memorial Stadium.

At that price, it is astonishing that Leeds did not go back in for the striker and they will hope it is not an error that they live to regret.
