Leeds United had been linked with Alvaro Negredo, but he looks set to move to Besiktas.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Leeds United have missed out in the race to sign Alvaro Negredo from Valencia, but it may not be particularly bad news.

Besiktas are set to sign Negredo on a three-year deal, which brings to an end any hope Leeds had of snapping up the high-profile striker.

Leeds are understood to have explored the possibility of landing Negredo, but his wages were simply too expensive to fund.

Besiktas will now sign up the former Manchester City man, in news which may disappoint some Leeds fans.

Negredo’s potential arrival at Elland Road has excited Whites supporters, but even though Thomas Christiansen’s side have missed out, it is not the end of the world for Leeds.

Indeed, had Leeds have signed Negredo – Besiktas were said to be lining up a bid for Chris Wood.

Gary Cahill of Chelsea holds off Alvaro Negredo of Middlesbrough during the Premier League match between Chelsea and Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on May 8, 2017 in London, England.

Reports on Turkish media website FotoMac said that Besiktas wanted Wood this summer, and were prepared to pay big to get him.

However, with Negredo joining the Turkish side there is no longer any need for Besiktas to move for Leeds’ star man.

And missing out on Negredo may have ultimately increased Leeds’ chances of keeping hold of Wood this summer.
