Leeds United could move to raid the Brazilian market this summer as they allegedly want to sign Fluminense wonderkid Matheus Martins.
That’s according to a report from Globo Esporte over in Brazil, who claim that Martins is attracting major interest.
It’s suggested that Shakhtar Donetsk wanted to sign Martins, but the ongoing situation in Ukraine means that won’t be happening.
Three clubs are now looking to secure Martins this summer; Leeds United in England, Benfica in Portugal and Ajax in the Netherlands.
No contact has been made with Fluminense but there have been enquiries to Martins’ agency according to this report.
Shakhtar allegedly had a bid of €7million (£6million) rejected for Martins and Fluminense are expecting a much bigger fee.
Martins does have a release clause of €50million (£42million) but it seems unlikely that paying that fee will be required.
Leeds already have one Brazilian star with Raphinha shining at Elland Road, and they may look to sell a similar dream to Martins.
The 18-year-old left winger has played 14 times for Fluminense’s first team and looks destined for a big move.
You do have to question whether Leeds need another winger right now though.
Jack Harrison, Daniel James and Raphinha are competing for two spots and that has been hard enough, with Crysencio Summerville struggling for action.
Maybe Leeds are eyeing Martins just in case Raphinha leaves this summer, with Barcelona strongly linked with signing the Leeds star.
Beating Ajax and Benfica won’t be easy though, especially as both clubs have had great success with Brazilian stars in recent years.
This is an exciting pursuit for Victor Orta though, who has picked out wonderkid Martins as a potential star of the future.
With the summer transfer window getting closer and closer, keep an eye on Martins for a big move away from Fluminense with Leeds right in the mix.
