Leeds United are interested in signing Palmeiras left back Joaquin Piquerez but a deal to sign him looks very tricky.
Palmeiras are standing firm on the future of left back Joaquin Piquerez amid interest from Leeds United.
That is according to a report from Torcedores in South America, who claim that Leeds want to sign Piquerez.
It’s stated that Leeds have made contact to try and lure Piquerez to Elland Road this summer.
However, the Palmeiras board have ruled out selling Piquerez and the left back is now expected to stay in Brazil.
Palmeiras won the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A in 2022 and don’t want to lose more talent after seeing Gustavo Scarpa and Danilo join Nottingham Forest in January.
Piquerez would be a big miss for Palmeiras and they seem to be blocking any move to Leeds.
Who is Leeds United target Joaquin Piquerez?
Piquerez hails from Montevideo in Uruguay and started his career in the Defensor Sporting ranks.
Piquerez moved on to River Plate Montevideo and Penarol, continuing to bounce about Uruguayan clubs before heading to Brazil in 2021.
The 24-year-old has now turned out more than 100 times for Palmeiras, bagging five goals and nine assists along the way.
Piquerez has also picked up nine caps for Uruguay having been a regular at youth level for his country.
That means Piquerez is firmly on the radar of Uruguay boss and Leeds hero Marcelo Bielsa.
Piquerez has now picked up two caps under Bielsa having earned seven before his appointment and he will be looking to develop with the former Leeds boss at the helm.
Leeds are likely to be in the market for another left back with Junior Firpo’s future unclear but a move to sign Piquerez appears to be a tricky one.
Tempting Palmeiras into selling won’t be easy and Leeds may now need to move on to other targets.
