Leeds United are into the third round of the EFL Cup after winning 1-0 away to League Two side Luton Town.
Former striker Noel Whelan, co-commentator for BBC Radio Leeds, gave his view on the side’s performance after the game.
He said: “We had a slice of luck tonight that you need in any game, especially cup games.
“It was a completely different 11, not used to playing together. We lost our spark in the second half and rode our luck a bit a times.
“Denton will be extremely pleased with himself, the debut under his belt, but there’s a few out there I’m not convinced by.
“Grimes is the one I’m least impressed with, Monk knows him, I’ve seen him a couple of times, I’m not sure what he’s bringing to the party.”
Leeds came into the game off the back of a confidence boosting win over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, their first league win of the season, while Luton were hopeful, having beaten Aston Villa in the previous round.
Head coach Garry Monk made several changes for the match, with Saturday’s goalscorers Chris Wood and Marcus Antonsson rested, as was Charlie Taylor.
It was Taylor’s replacement, academy talent Tyler Denton, who made the biggest impact, scoring an impressive goal from the edge of the box to give Leeds the league on his debut.
Midfielder Luke Murphy was recalled but did not particularly stand out, lasting around an hour before being substituted, while new signing Pontus Jansson will be pleased with his night’s work in central defence.
