Leeds United midfielder Matt Grimes has told BBC Radio Leeds he is hopeful he can improve after an underwhelming start to the season.

The England under-21 international signed on loan from Swansea City for the season, but has been unable to establish himself in the first team.

The club’s academy talents Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips are ahead of him in the pecking order, but Grimes wants to kick on.

He played in the midweek EFL Cup win over Norwich City, his first start for two months. It was a mixed game for him, missing a penalty in the shootout, but simply being part of the team’s success will give him confidence.

Talking about his start to life at Elland Road, Grimes told BBC Radio Leeds: “It has been a difficult start for me but I’ve spoken to the manager in last couple of months about getting back to level I think I should be.

“I say first hand I wasn’t at the level I should be at start of the season, I wasn’t quite on it but I’m feeling more back to myself now and ready to push on.”

Quizzed about his future, Grimes sounded uncertain, and much will depend on how the rest of the season plays out for him at Leeds, whether they want him, and what plans Swansea may have for him.

He added: “It’s a big question. I’ve still got this year and two years left on my Swansea contract. We’ll take it game by game, see how things progress and take a decision when it comes to it.”

Grimes has short term security whatever happens for him this season, but there is plenty of time left for him to force his way into the team.

Describing himself as capable of playing a holding midfield role or as a number 10, his versatility could see him receive further opportunities, with more than 30 Championship games remaining this season plus cup matches.
