Leeds United striker’s frustrating 2018 continues.

Leeds United talent Mallik Wilks entered 2018 with high hopes but so far they have not been realised.

Wilks returned from his loan spell at Accrington after showing real promise and scoring his first professional goals.

Leeds fans were calling for him to get a first team chance, but the Whites had other ideas as they sanctioned a loan move to Grimbsy and signed Tyler Roberts instead.

It is a move which has worked out well for nobody so far.

Roberts got injured in his first training session at Leeds and is out for the foreseeable future.

If Wilks had remained at Leeds then perhaps he would have been given a chance considering a lack of options behind Pierre-Michel Lasogga.

Mallik Wilks of Accrington Stanley celebrates during the Sky Bet League Two match between Notts County and Accrington Stanley at Meadow Lane on August 25, 2017 in Nottingham, England.

As it stands, he has not had a proper chance to impress out on loan.

He too suffered an injury and the Grimsby Telegraph reported this week he has been ruled out of the weekend’s game with his hamstring problem.

Wilks, 19, has played twice as a substitute for a combined 30 minutes of football, and played twice as a starter out on the wing, being hooked off at half-time in his most recent appearance.

Missing this weekend’s game means he will have been out of action for a month by time he returns.

The positive momentum he had built up in the first half of the season for himself has ground to a halt, and he needs to find a way to finish strongly when he returns to action, so he can return to Leeds with confidence.
